How Our Youth Program Started

In 1982, as the Berkeley County Civic Theatre, we hosted the Downtown Merchant Association Follies. It was after a rehearsal that Steward Borger showed us an article in the Aetna Insurance Magazine about a grant that we could apply for to hold a theatre workshop. But we needed a director so we hired P.R. Swago, the director of the DMA Follies, and the rest, as they say, is history. In 1987 we changed our name to the Apollo Civic Theatre. Over the years the program was ran by volunteers in our organization. But in 1997 it was decided not to have a summer program due to lack of volunteers to run the program so at a soccer dinner that my wife and I were attending with our son I went to Deb Pathoff and asked her to run our program. From that point forward the program has been chaired by parents of the youth in the program. I am grateful to all the volunteers that have worked over the years to keep this program alive. With the success of the summer program we added a Junior Production After School program in the Fall and Spring. Today what is special to me is to have our alumni come back and run the programs. Amy White was the first alumni to be a director and instructor of the summer program. Today we have alumni Anthony Brooks, Director and Brett Cole Stage Manager of our Summer and After School programs along with my daughter Tiffany Leighton, Director and James Miller Musical Director of our After School programs. These leaders grew up in the program and are now leading and passing on their love for the program. From all of our staff, volunteers and Board of Directors it is our hopes that those participating in our program will have a memorable and joyous workshop and that you will make friends and memories that you will carry for years to come.
